Meet Becky Dyer. She holds a bachelor degree in physiotherapy and is a certified Pilates instructor. She’s also one of the founders of pregnancy exercise program, Body Beyond Birth. This is her story.

As an active kid I had my fair share of physiotherapy treatments and orthopaedic injuries. Thankfully, this exposed me to the amazing profession of physiotherapy!

I realised that physiotherapy would be the perfect blend for my love of sports and all things medical. So that is what I did.

As an adult, I started by studying Exercise Science and became a Certified Athletic Trainer at the University of Illinois. Somewhat ironically, I was a physical wreck after a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).  I gained several kilograms due to the inactivity and a healthy diet of pizza and beer.

And while it may not be the usual career highlight for someone in exercise, I think it gives me a unique insight. I know what it’s like to come back from a major injury and a big change in diet, exercise and body shape!

After my knee healed, I worked myself back into shape by becoming an aerobics instructor. I started to shed a few kilos and started my career in exercise instruction in earnest.

Mind you, I still felt like the thickest exercise instructor out there! But I also knew that being fit was so much better than being skinny so I hung in there.

From here, I went on to study physiotherapy at Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles. To combat my sedentary life as a student I started running with a classmate. Later that year we ran the L.A. marathon together (my first and last marathon).

After a romantic ski lift ride with a charming Australian, I moved to Colorado and married him. There I worked in private practice physiotherapy and skied the slopes.

Now I’m so lucky to call the gorgeous city of Sydney home.

Becky Dyer the physiotherapist

As a physiotherapist, I’ve had the pleasure of working with a diverse range of patients. From elite college athletes to little old ladies with total hip replacements, I have seen it all.

My favourite patients have always been pregnant and postnatal women. I feel so connected to these patients because I can identify with them.

I’ve been a physiotherapist and exercise instructor for 20 years and I still love my job every day. It is so amazing to use my hands and my clinical skills to help people move without pain. I love encouraging and giving people the tools to heal themselves.

There is nothing more rewarding then seeing someone regain movement. Or hearing a patient say “You’ve helped me so much!”

How did I end up founding Body Beyond Birth?

I started teaching prenatal and postnatal exercise classes at the hospital where I delivered my baby. I also continued to offer physiotherapy treatments for pregnant and postnatal women. I was working through what I needed to regain health and fitness in my own post-birth experience. It was at this time I realised that my body had a love hate relationship with running. I also realised how awesome Pilates was for bodies of all shapes and sizes.

The potential of Pilates got me excited. Pilates made so much sense functionally as a physiotherapist. It was applying ideas of resistance and movement I knew worked. As a person carrying lots of old injuries, it gave me the ability to exercise without fear or concern.

After my second daughter was born, I became a Certified Pilates instructor. I opened my own Women’s Health physiotherapy private practice and Pilates studio in Sydney.

Becky Dyer meets Jackie Steele

Jackie and I met when she hobbled into my practice pregnant with a rather big baby belly. “Twins,” she proudly explained.

With some hands-on treatment and juicy physiotherapy advice, she walked out without her waddle. And Jackie made it through the rest of her pregnancy without falling apart at the seams.

After Jackie had her twins (one posterior, one breach, and an all-natural birth), I realised she was made of some pretty tough stuff!  I treated Jackie with Pilates focused core strengthening post-natally. Her kitten-weak abs were cause for concern, as was reducing her rather large abdominal separation. With treatment and regular exercise at home, Jackie managed to whittle an 8 centimetre separation down to around 1 centimetre.

Two heads are better than one

The shared experience of the toll pregnancy takes on the body was an eye opener for both of us. Jackie and I both realised how exhausting and challenging it was to get our pre-pregnancy strength back. Regaining fitness without inviting pelvic injuries or damage to the pelvic floor was a challenge. Avoiding the worsening our abdominal separations was a constant battle. But we also knew we had the knowledge and experience to avoid the issues. And that other women may not be as fortunate.

Not everyone has access to safe postnatal programs. Or the ability to even leave the house once they have a newborn. That’s when we decided we wanted to give women their freedom and their health back post birth.

We came up with a plan to bring super safe and effective core abdominal and pelvic floor exercises to women just like us. And we wanted to deliver those exercises to people that didn’t have the luxury of time, money, and babysitters to head to a Pilates studio.

That humble plan blossomed into the Body Beyond Birth you see today. Our online Pilates-based exercise program is designed specifically for women who’ve had a baby. Whether you’re facing issues with your pelvic floor or you want to reclaim your pre-pregnancy wardrobe, BBB can help.
